Valve Leakage / Narrowing

The heart valves are thin flexible fibrous flaps inside the heart that direct blood to flow in the correct direction. Problems can arise if the valve leaks, resulting in backflow; or if the valve is too narrow, obstructing blood flow.

Symptoms of Valve Disease are:

  • Breathlessness
  • Decreased energy/exercise capacity
  • Leg swelling/Abdominal swelling
  • Irregular Heartbeat/Palpitations

Treatment

Assessment is crucial as early valve disease does not require active treatment and only requires close follow-up. Severe valve disease may cause symptoms that can be treated with medication. However, definitive treatment may require surgery to either repair or replace the malfunctioning valve. Patients with valve disease should see their Doctor regularly as some valve disease increases the risk of valve infection, which is potentially life-threatening.
